Introduction:
Welcome to the first lesson in this introductory series to playing rock guitar. There won’t be any guitar playing in this lesson, but we’ll look at some important aspects of music in general that’ll help make things easier to understand down the track. Don’t fret though… After just one month of lessons, you’ll be able to have a stab at playing many of your favorite rock tunes.

Introduction:
Welcome to the second installment in my rock guitar lessons. After an initial look at music last week, this week, we’ll build on our background knowledge and after a brief tour of guitars and amplifiers, we’ll have a look at our first three chords.

Holding The Pick:

In this lesson, we’ll study playing technique, learn some more chords and then have a look at ‘Power Chords‘. So, fire up your guitar and get stuck into to some serious learnin’.

If you’re playing rock, you’ll most likely be using a pick/plectrum. You don’t have to by any means, but I’d suggest beginning with one. Players like Mark Knopfler and Lindsay Buckingham do not use picks to achieve their sound.

It’s time to learn how to finger. We’ve looked at chords and some of the theory behind them, but now, we’re going to start on some work that’ll lead us to playing solos.

The fingering exercise from lesson four was not designed to sound good, but it got your fingers on the fret board and made you think about what goes into making a good sounding note. I’d recommend continuing with that exercise for the rest of your life.

To make something sound musical, it will have to follow the rules of music. Now I know what you’re probably thinking. Not more theory… Well this is more theory, but it’s about the bare minimum that you should know. It’s important stuff. It’ll give you musical ‘power’, an ability to create and learn things with ease. After practice that is!

Harmonics Tuning:

Does your guitar tune up ok? Does it sound in tune when you’re playing down low on the neck? Does it sound out of tune when you play something anywhere but down low on the neck? Well, it’s a fair bet your harmonics are out of whack!

playing blues solos PDF Print E-mail

This weeks tip is an experiment in AV by myself. I bought a little handycam yesterday so that I could add that something extra to these tips. What you see in this tip is my first attempt at AV, so feel free to deride my pathetic production skillz. :)

The tip is an introduction to playing the blues, but you'll find that most rock guitar solos have their origins in blues style playing.

There's no TAB for this one, because of the visuals, you should be able to see what I'm doing! Anyway, as I said above, this is just an experiment to have a go at it. They'll improve as I get used to the equipment.

accessible to guitarists of differing skill levels.

wondering why microphones don't pick up the sounds you hear? PDF Print E-mail

The simple answer is that they do . You see, what you perceive as sound has been massaged by your ears and then, to a larger extent, your brain. Your ears are shaped to make your brains job easier. They somehow filter the incoming sound waves into discreet 'groupings', and your brain then works out what parts of those waves are important and which parts are excess baggage.
